Ryan Helligso has been operating Helligso Construction in Astoria, Oregon, since 2003, but the company goes back even further: his father, Larry, started the business in 1978. Today, Ryan and his wife Brandi deliver high-quality construction projects in Astoria and nearby communities. While they enjoy the unique challenges and rewards of each construction project, what they find especially satisfying about their business is building ventures that serve the community.

When they had to shut down temporarily and suffered a 30–40% reduction in projects, it was that sense of community that kept them going. They implemented needed safety measures and were able to get back to work more quickly than many other businesses, something for which Ryan and Brandi are very grateful.

Now they’re expressing that gratitude by paying it forward, helping another small business impacted by the pandemic. Thanks to Helligso Construction and Columbia Bank, Fulio’s Restaurant in downtown Astoria is getting needed improvements so it can better accommodate customers, and Columbia Bank is picking up the tab. Not only do Ryan and Brandi have the satisfaction of knowing that they’ve helped another small business during this challenging time, they know they’ll be assured of enjoying their favorite Fulio’s dishes (butternut squash ravioli with curried cream sauce for Brandi, ribeye steak for Ryan).
