Believe it or not, Alter Ego Cider of Portland is actually the brainchild of two winemakers. “Our name – Alter Ego – comes from our beginnings,” says owner Anne Hubatch. “We were founded by two winemakers and it is their ‘alter ego’ is to make cider!” Today, these winemakers run a cidery and a small tap house.

Humorous beginnings aside, the affects from the pandemic have been no laughing matter. “We had to lay off our entire staff,” says Hubatch. “My business partner and I have had to jump into the trenches and do every job from bar shifts, to all production, to all sales.”

Undaunted by the challenges, the Hubatch’s are solidly behind the partnership of Columbia Bank’s Pass It On Project. That is why Alter Ego Cider is providing gift cards that will help support local schools and Columbia Bank is picking up the tab. “We are donating gift cards to redeem at our cidery to local events to help raise funds for local schools,” she says. “With Columbia Bank picking up the tab, we hope to provide some vital support to our schools and help children and teachers who have suffered during this global challenge.”
